Lionel Messi: The Journey of a Legend

Lionel Messi is not just a football player. For millions of people around the world, he is an emotion, an inspiration and one of the biggest reasons they fell in love with football. His journey was not always easy. From a small boy in Argentina to becoming a World Cup winner, Messi went through struggles, heartbreaks, criticism and incredible success.

Where It All Started

Lionel Andrés Messi was born on June 24, 1987, in Rosario, Argentina. He started playing football when he was very young, and it quickly became clear that he was different from other kids.

Messi joined Newell’s Old Boys when he was a child. He was small, but whenever he had the ball, his size didn’t seem to matter. He could dribble past players who were much bigger than him and had a natural understanding of the game.

But Messi had a serious problem. He was diagnosed with a growth hormone deficiency, and his treatment was expensive. His family could not easily afford it, and his future in football was uncertain.

Then came the biggest decision of his young life.

At only 13 years old, Messi moved from Argentina to Spain after Barcelona agreed to take him into their youth academy and help with his treatment. Leaving his home and family at such a young age was not easy, but Messi knew that this could be his chance.

And he took it.

Barcelona

Messi slowly made his way through Barcelona’s famous academy, La Masia. He was playing against older and stronger players, but he kept improving.

In 2004, at just 17 years old, Messi made his official first-team debut for Barcelona.

Nobody knew at that moment that they were watching the beginning of one of the greatest careers football had ever seen.

Messi started getting more playing time and slowly became one of Barcelona’s most important players. His dribbling was unbelievable, his left foot was special and he seemed to know what was going to happen before everyone else.

Then came the Guardiola era.

With Pep Guardiola as manager, Barcelona became one of the greatest teams in football history. Messi was at the center of everything.

In the 2008–09 season, Barcelona won La Liga, the Copa del Rey and the Champions League, completing a historic treble.

Messi kept getting better every year.

He scored goals that seemed impossible. He dribbled past several defenders, scored free kicks, created chances for his teammates and broke record after record.

In 2012, he scored 91 goals in a calendar year, something that showed just how ridiculous his level was.

During his Barcelona career, Messi became the club’s all-time leading goalscorer and won 10 La Liga titles, four Champions League titles and many other trophies.

For Barcelona fans, he wasn’t just a player anymore.

He was their number 10. Their leader. Their magician.

Argentina and the Heartbreak

While Messi was winning almost everything with Barcelona, things were very different when he played for Argentina.

Messi made his senior Argentina debut in 2005. He had already won the U-20 World Cup and Olympic gold with Argentina, but the biggest trophy with the senior team kept escaping him.

The pain became especially bad in 2014.

Argentina reached the World Cup final in Brazil, and Messi had the chance to win the biggest trophy in football. But Germany scored in extra time and won the final 1–0.

Messi had lost another important final.

Then came the Copa América.

Argentina reached the final in 2015 but lost to Chile on penalties.

A year later, Argentina again faced Chile in the Copa América Centenario final. Once again, the match went to penalties. Once again, Argentina lost.

Messi missed his penalty and was devastated.

After the match, he announced that he was retiring from international football.

For a player who had achieved almost everything at club level, his biggest dream was still missing.

Messi Comes Back

Thankfully for football fans, Messi didn’t stay retired from international football.

He returned to Argentina and continued playing.

And finally, in 2021, everything changed.

Argentina reached the Copa América final and faced Brazil at the Maracanã. Ángel Di María scored the only goal of the match, and Argentina won 1–0.

Messi finally had his first major senior international trophy with Argentina.

The emotion after the final was huge. Messi had waited for this moment for years.

But he wasn’t done.

The World Cup

In 2022, Messi went to Qatar for what many people believed could be his last World Cup.

Argentina’s tournament started terribly. They lost their opening game 2–1 to Saudi Arabia.

But instead of giving up, Argentina responded.

They beat Mexico, Poland, Australia, the Netherlands and Croatia to reach the final.

Then came France.

The 2022 World Cup final became one of the greatest football matches ever played.

Messi scored twice, while Argentina and France ended the match 3–3 after extra time. Everything came down to penalties.

Argentina won.

Messi finally became a World Cup champion.

After years of criticism and disappointment, he had finally lifted the trophy that everyone said was missing from his career.

He also won the Golden Ball as the best player of the tournament.

For many people, that was the moment Messi’s story became complete.

The little boy from Rosario had become a world champion.

Leaving Barcelona

While Messi was still enjoying success with Argentina, his club career had already taken a painful turn.

In 2021, Messi left Barcelona after the club was unable to register his new contract because of its financial situation.

It was an emotional goodbye.

Messi had spent more than 20 years connected to Barcelona, from being a young boy at La Masia to becoming the greatest player in the club’s history.

But football moves on.

Messi joined Paris Saint-Germain.

Paris Saint-Germain

Messi’s time at PSG was different from what fans had become used to seeing from him at Barcelona.

He played alongside players such as Neymar and Kylian Mbappé and won Ligue 1 titles, but the team did not achieve the Champions League success many expected.

After two seasons, Messi decided to leave Paris.

A new chapter was waiting for him.

Inter Miami

In 2023, Messi shocked the football world by moving to Inter Miami in Major League Soccer.

Many people expected him to move to another European club, but Messi chose a completely different challenge.

And he immediately changed the club.

Messi helped Inter Miami win the 2023 Leagues Cup, the first major trophy in the club’s history.

He was also reunited with some of his old Barcelona teammates, including Luis Suárez, Sergio Busquets and Jordi Alba.

Messi’s arrival also brought huge attention to football in the United States.

Stadiums were packed, fans travelled just to see him and MLS suddenly had one of the biggest football stars in the world playing in the league.

Inter Miami later won the Supporters’ Shield in 2024 and the MLS Cup in 2025.

Even at an age when most footballers are already retired, Messi continued producing goals, assists and moments that reminded everyone that his talent had not disappeared.

Messi Today

Messi is now in the later part of his career, but he is still capable of producing incredible performances.

On August 29, 2026, he scored four goals and provided an assist as Inter Miami defeated CF Montréal 7–1.

At this stage of his career, Messi doesn’t need to prove himself anymore.

He has already won almost everything a footballer can dream of.

He has won league titles, Champions League trophies, domestic cups, the Copa América and the FIFA World Cup. He has also won the Ballon d’Or multiple times and broken countless records.

But his journey is bigger than the trophies.

He was a small kid from Rosario who had a medical problem and moved to another country at just 13 years old.

He was criticized for not winning with Argentina.

He lost World Cup and Copa América finals.

He even retired from international football for a short time.

But he came back.

He kept going.

And eventually, he lifted the World Cup.

From Rosario to Barcelona, from Barcelona to Paris, and from Paris to Miami, Messi’s journey has been filled with moments that football fans will remember forever.

Maybe that’s what makes his story so special.

He wasn’t perfect. He lost. He struggled. He was criticized.

But every time he fell, he came back.

And after more than two decades at the highest level, Lionel Messi has already left a mark on football that will be almost impossible to erase.
